Reverb at Lopez Museum

Reverb
(Lopez Museum, September 12, 2011-April 3, 2012)

What does a museum sound like?

Apart from the gustatory and olfactory, the aural sense is possibly the least serviced among all the human sensory channels through which we experience what gets shown in museums and other spaces tending to human sensation. And so it was in keeping with the idea of venturing forth into mostly untrodden paths that Lopez Museum presents Reverb, a group exhibition on sound and the broad auditory spectrum as it opens to the public September 12, 2011. Reverb is the museum’s onsite offering for the Zero In museum consortium’s Open Call Festival which runs from September 15-24, 2011 at the SM Mall of Asia Atrium.

Reverb takes off from notions having to do with resonance, registration, and audible impressions. It brings together sound-based work from artists such as Eric Ambata, Kawayan de Guia, Tad Ermitaño, IC Jaucian, Diokno Pasilan, Ronald Tomas, the collaborative, E.X.I.S.T. (Experimentation in Sound Art Tradition), and UP College of Music ethnomusicologist Dr. Christine Muyco. In responding to Lopez Museum’s open call for sound-based proposals last year, these artists will be showing an amalgam of old and new works drawn up from the ambient and self-produced, the installative and site-specific, the found and the overlooked, alongside objects from the museum collection that invoke hearing and an overall sharpening of the experiential aspect of encountering art.

Reverb’s off-site component at the SM MOA Atrium will encourage mallers to physically engage with everyday objects such as air mattresses, and surrounding foliage. Live performances from these invited artists will make up both Reverb’s onsite and off-site complements which are also intended to emphasize the temporal and intangible nature of sound art.

The Lopez Museum is at the ground floor, Benpres Building, Exchange Road corner Meralco Avenue, Pasig City. Museum days and hours are Mondays-Saturdays, 8am-5pm,except holidays. You may reach the museum through telephone Numbers: 6312417/6359545.

World Listening Day 2011 (Cavite PH)

We participated in World Listening Day 2011 (Cavite PH) last Sunday at Balite Falls, Amadeo, Cavite! It was an intimate gathering to celebrate listening and field recordings. The celebration in Cavite, Philippines was a response to the open invitation by World Listening Project (WLP) and Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology (MSAE).

Thanks to Erick Calilan (E.X.I.S.T.), program head of the event. Thanks also to Sir Bokeng (Balite Falls), E.X.I.S.T., Espasyo Siningdikato, Gerard Natividad, Samuel André, Tengal, Kreame Isaac, Eric Diolola, Gentle Universe, Cosmopolitan Smoke Stabs (Cosmoss), Stanley Castelo, Rej Fabi, Valerie Faye Bautista, Jonie Ayson, Arth Ayson, Kyril Dx and all those who supported and celebrated the event!

The first World Listening Day was co-organized by the WLP and MSAE. July 18 was chosen as the date for World Listening Day because it is the birthday of Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer, who established the World Soundscape Project in the late-60s at Simon Fraser University. Schafer’s 1977 book, The Soundscape: Our Sonic Environment and the Tuning of the World was a culminating publication about the research of the WSP that provided a foundation for the interdisciplinary field now known as Acoustic Ecology.

Happy World Listening Day!

Cris

Get Well Soon Emorej: Electronica Manila organizes a support gig for Emorej (aka Jerome Llama)

Emorej (Jerome Llama) is a mild-mannered businessman by day but by night, he transforms into, quite possibly, the most prolific electronic music producer in Manila. Last month, Emorej had a cardiac arrest and is now in a coma. “He is still in a coma and slow in coming out of it, and music is our best bet since electronica is more or less his love and obsession,” Elsbeth Llama, sister of Emorej, says.

Silverfilter, head of Electronica Manila (EM), says “Let's all continue to pray for his quick recovery. Emorej is an active member in Electronica Manila, online and offline. He's always in EM events”.

“Please pray for his recovery -- that he be cured of pneumonia, awaken from his coma, and resume his joyful music-making,” Lionel Valdellon, EM member and founder of QED Records Netlabel, adds.

Since 2001, he's used a program called ACID PRO to create music with samples and virtual instruments, amassing a stockpile of tracks and albums that have been enjoyed by listeners worldwide. He is the first artist to represent the Philippines on Jamendo, a music website based in Luxenbourg. He also won in the 1st Philippine Digital Music Awards (Phil Digi Awards 2009) for Best House/Electronic Music Category.

Join Electronica Manila on June 22, 2011, 8PM at Capone’s (A Venue, Makati Ave, Makati City). Silverfilter, Flavours N’ Caffeine, Pupiliris, Migi de Belen (Nights of Rizal), F-Zero and Blend:er will perform to show support.

“We play for his recovery, because we believe in supporting our brother and his family in this time of need.” - Electronica Manila

Entrance fee is Php 150 with 1 free drink courtesy of Capone’s. Proceeds will be donated to help Emorej’s medical expenses.

------------------------------

Electronica Manila. Formed in May 16, 2002, Electronica Manila has remained the premier collective of electronic music producers and enthusiasts focused on promoting and cultivating electronic music in the Philippines. Pushing not just the appreciation of the genre, the group has continuously stood as a community engaged in the development of Philippine-made electronica. With members coming from all backgrounds from producer, DJ, listener, and even fans of homegrown electronic artists, Electronica Manila has always contributed to the awareness of the local electronic scene. www.electronicamanila.org.

QED RECORDS is a netlabel originally based in the Philippines, but now recently relocated to Hayward, California. It is the brainchild of Acid42 a.k.a. Lionel Valdellon. It went online June 25, 2004 as an alternative channel through which he could offer his music free on the web and quickly grew into an online showcase of electronic music made by colleagues and countrymen.

Special Thanks to Capone’s Bistro and Sound Engineer Charlie Morales.

Performers:

Silverfilter can claim an essential part in the rise of live dance music in the Philippines with a decade of LIVE PA experience under his belt, playing for the biggest events and most happening clubs all over the country. Fusing the live experience to the DJ vibe, every silverfilter set is sure to be the best of both worlds and has proven to entertain crowds from all over. His live performances and his original tracks have already proven to be ear candies to floor-fillers with his tracks being signed by record labels in UK, Italy, Germany, France, Romania, US, and Denmark, making him one of the most sought after electronic music producers in the industry. http://www.silverfilter.com

Pupiliris

Pupiliris is a project of music producer and sound artist Jezi Matias (aka Single Eye Perspective) focusing on the less-is-more side of electronic/dance music. http://pupiliris.bandcamp.com/

Migi de Belen (Nights of Rizal) is a singer-songwriter and producer who is involved in a number of bands and collaborations. As electronic act Nights of Rizal, he borrows from the catchy nostalgia of 8bit and chiptune genres to formulate his own unmistakable hybrid of lo-fi and hi-fi, analogue and digital, human and machine. You will hear a wide variety of beats in his sets: from hip-hop and house to dubstep, and even some drum and bass and IDM… http://soundcloud.com/nightsofrizal

F-Zero

F-Zero regularly plays drum & bass DJ sets in venues across Metro Manila, mainly in Makati & The Fort. He has released a number of tracks and EPs under QED Records (a Philippine electronica net label owned and operated by Lionel Valdellion aka Acid42). He has also released material via NXT Phage, an online Drum & Bass movement based in the Philippines. In 2010, he was drafted by US-based dance music label, Ultraphonix Recordings. One of his tracks, "Ultra Magnus", was hailed editor’s pick for the last quarter of 2010 at djdownload.com. In 2011 He released his "Her Smile" EP via Ultraphonix and his music was well-received by the dance music scene in Atlanta, Georgia. http://soundcloud.com/fzero-ph

Flavours N’ Caffeine

The concept Flavours and Caffeine was formed early November of 2006, with members Tina Roxas (Vocals) and Franco Madrid (Synths programming), and Paolo Pacheco from AMPON (turntables, effects) who just joined them in March 2008. They all started out as music producers/composers in the indie music domain. Boy Ramos (The Thought/ Watari’s Machine) and Rem Vocalan (Dayuhan) recently joined the group for FNC’s live set up.
